Stussy Guest Artist JJ Villard

JJ VILLARD graduated from Cal Arts with a degree in Character Animation in the midst of a three-year run as the winner of each year’s top prize for international collegiate animation at North America’s most prestigious animation film festival in Ottawa, Canada. Other honors his film work garnered around the time of his graduation included selection as a finalist for the top student animation prizes at the Cannes Film Festival and the Student Academy Awards. He was subsequently hired by DreamWorks Animation as a storyboard and visual development artist and worked there for four years on such feature films as Shrek 3, Shrek 4, and Monsters vs. Aliens. Meanwhile, Villard’s fine arts pieces have been featured in Museums in the U.S. and abroad, including New York’s Museum Of Modern Art, the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Museum of Modern Art Croatia, and REDCAT Los Angeles. His work has also been featured in articles in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times (where Mahnola Dargis described one of his films as having “a rough-hewn beauty and direct narrative attack that recall RAW Magazine”), in Chris Robinson’s book Unsung Heroes of Animation, where it appeared on the cover, and in Dark Horse Books’ graphic novel Scrambled Ink. Villard is currently working at Adult Swim/Cartoon Network on several new projects.
